I still remember dancing all those night away to the greatest beats while I was serving in the Canadian Forces in Germany (Lahr to be more precise).
I was 19 years old at the time, the time when going out dancing actually takes up a large part of our lives. There was nothing special about Lahr; It was a small town bordering the Black Forest and where the modest Canadian Armed Forces had settled for many years.
So… why was the music and beats so good there?
One of my good Canadian friends, Stef, who was just a few years older than me, worked part time as a DJ in night clubs in Lahr and also at a radio station.
Stef was also from Switzerland and he had his way with music and also “showed me around” the small but very active night life. I really loved how much music was part of his life.
As I hung out from one place to another, one thing became very clear, when the beats were “awesomely good and different”, they were either from Zurich or a DJ from there was actually hired for a weekend gig.
Slowly, the urge to discover the night life is Zurich started growing on me…
I mean really. It became a dream to go there and visit night clubs to dance to best beats I had heard in my life.
Unfortunately, my military service came to a stop and I left Europe without realizing my dream…Still, I hung to that dream and even called my German shepherd Zurich.
30 years have past… without forgetting that dream. What a blessing that life and work would bring my spouse Nathalie and I back to Switzerland for my 50th Birthday!
Nathalie and a few friends who were also coincidentally in Switzerland during the same period agreed that we would embrace the opportunity to realize my dream and that we would all go dance in Zurich.
One of my friends even flew especially from Africa to join us.
At last, my dream came true!!
It was exactly what I thought it would be. With the recommendation of a friend’s friend, we hit a multiple floor lounge called “HIVE”.
There we found skilled DJ’s on multiple floors electrifying crowds to various electro beats. What a night, what a 50th Birthday. I’ll always remember this very special time.
So this one is out of the bucket list, which one is the next?
